It's not uncommon for me to be contacted to consult on paint colors for a home that is being put up for sale. Typically I'll walk in and the homeowner will be all excited to show me the striking hues and accent walls they have planned, eager for my approval. While I'm all for the enthusiasm, I always have to reign them in.
When preparing a home for resale we have a few main goals...
1. Create a space that looks clean, light and bright
2. Give the look of an open flow throughout spaces
3. Appeal to the most potential buyers
Again, I'm all for the excitement of the homeowner, but color is so very personal. Purple is beautiful to me, but to applying it to the walls of a home being sold is just a strict "NO". In fact, it's been found that some tones of purple can make people physically sick! Red, (yes even on an accent wall) is just too bold for many people and can cause anxiety. I've also often had to steer people away from key lime green!
What SHOULD you do?
I always encourage a mostly monochromatic color scheme throughout.
Sure you can lighten and deepen colors in various rooms but keep the hues somewhat neutral, preferably in a warm tone or cool tone. Try to stay away from those stark white colors that cause the room to read like a hospital room. Then, the new homeowner can add their own personal touches and accents after they've moved in.
Do you need a paint color consultation?
Let me know. I'd love to help!
